A library is a hub for learning and community engagement that provides equitable access to a diverse collection of resources, both physical and digital, and offers a variety of services to support education, recreation, and personal growth for people of all ages.
The Collection: A library's collection is thoughtfully developed to meet the broad interests and diverse needs of its community. The collection encompasses a wide range of materials, including books, periodicals, newspapers, e-books, audiobooks, music, films, and access to online databases. Special collections may also include unique or local history materials, such as archives and rare manuscripts.
Services Provided:
Circulation and Reference: Libraries handle borrowing and returning materials and provide expert assistance to help patrons find the information they need through reference interviews and readers' advisory.
Access to Technology: Most libraries offer free access to computers, the internet, and Wi-Fi to help bridge the digital divide. Some also provide technology training and "makerspaces" with tools like 3D printers.
Programs and Events: Libraries host a variety of programs for all ages, including story times for children, summer reading clubs, book clubs, author talks, and workshops on various topics.
Community Space: Libraries serve as a public space for quiet study, group meetings, and community gatherings.
Outreach and Education: Many libraries extend their services beyond their physical walls through online resources, mobile services (like bookmobiles), and educational outreach initiatives.
Mission
The mission of the Bessemer City Middle School Library is to provide equitable access to diverse resources and engaging learning experiences. We empower students to develop information literacy and digital citizenship skills, support classroom curriculum, and foster a lifelong passion for reading and learning.
Vision
The Bessemer Middle School Library envisions a dynamic and inclusive learning hub where students are empowered to be curious, creative, and critical thinkers. Our students will graduate with a lifelong love of reading and the skills to ethically and effectively navigate a complex, information-rich world.
