Bessemer City Middle School Prioritizes Mental Health with Monthly Pet Therapy Program

Seventh-grade students at Bessemer City Middle School (BCMS) are continuing to benefit from a monthly Pet Therapy program, an initiative designed to bolster student mental health alongside academic achievement. Spearheaded by 7th-grade educators Rev. Brandon Baum, Mrs. Rachel Campbell, Ms. Yvonne Turner, and Dr. Yuvraj Verma, the program aims to address the critical need to focus on the whole child within the rigorous K-12 academic setting.

Research has consistently shown that pet therapy offers a plethora of benefits for students’ mental and emotional well-being, providing a necessary counterpoint to the immense focus on academic performance. During the sessions, students remain engaged on iReady, an online learning platform that delivers lessons at their specific academic performance level, while certified therapy dogs circulate throughout the classroom. This innovative approach ensures that mental well-being is integrated with the pursuit of scholastic growth.

The program's continuation is facilitated by a grant secured by Dr. Verma from Pet Partners, approving the monthly sessions. Pet Therapy has been a consistent resource at BCMS since the last school year, with many current students having previously experienced its positive effects. The 7th-grade team’s efforts build upon the initial Pet Therapy initiative established by the school’s 6th-grade teachers, underscoring BCMS’s long-term commitment to providing comprehensive mental health support for its student population.
