Bessemer City Middle School Robotics Team Advances to State Championship

BESSEMER, Ala. — A team of young innovators from Bessemer City Middle School is heading to the state finals after a successful performance in the FIRST LEGO League STEM Challenge.

Team 6-7 secured its spot in the state championship following a standout showing that combined engineering skills, coding and creative problem-solving. Led by teacher Yuvraj Verma, the students competed in several categories, including robot design and a core values presentation.

Verma credited the victory to a collective community effort, emphasizing that the scholars’ success was fueled by a wide network of support.

“Unquestionably, the kids’ victory was a team effort,” Verma said.

The road to the championship was paved with assistance from local educators and community members, including Rachel Campbell, Brandon Baum, Assistant Principal Darral Grace Bethel, Van Phillips Sr., Javonne Levy, AJ Yvette, Amanda Hicks Croom, Eyanna Bell, Assistant Principal Sarah Person, Terry Dawson, Tonia Miller, Jennifer Veitch, Daphney Shade and Sonya Smith.

In addition to the technical mentorship, the team received local backing for their logistical needs, including a lunch provided by Erika Hughes during the competition.

The FIRST LEGO League (FLL) challenge tasks middle school students with researching a real-world problem and developing a solution using LEGO-based robotics. The Bessemer City Middle School team will now prepare to face the top teams from across Alabama in the upcoming state tournament.
