Hard Elementary Scholars Combine Science and Literacy in Volcano Experiment

BESSEMER, Ala. — Students in Mrs. Hadley-Lewis’ class at Charles F. Hard Elementary turned a reading assignment into a hands-on scientific demonstration.

The activity bridged the gap between literacy and earth science as scholars built their own volcano to complement the weekly reading selection, “Volcano Rising.” The project allowed students to review key vocabulary words from the text and make real-world connections to the geological processes they studied.

The lesson culminated in a live demonstration where students watched their handmade volcano erupt in the classroom.

“Integrating science and reading helps bring learning to life,” school officials said. “Today’s lesson was the perfect example of how curiosity, creativity, and comprehension come together.”

Administrators praised the scholars for their engagement and encouraged them to continue exploring the intersections of different academic subjects. The project is part of an ongoing effort at the school to use multidimensional learning experiences to increase student retention and interest in STEM fields.
